Iran to live up to its commitments under new deal: Rouhani

TEHRAN, Apr. 04 (MNA) – Iran’s president on Friday hailed a framework nuclear deal as a step toward mending frayed relations with the West but warned that he expected the US and other world powers to live up to its terms.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has pledged that his nation will abide by its commitments in the historic nuclear agreement reached in Switzerland, declaring that the deal opens a "new page" for Iran in its relations with the rest of the world over the nuclear agreement.

In a televised address on Friday, President Rouhani said a final agreement would depend on both sides living up to their commitments. "If the other side honors its promises, we will honor ours too," he said, a day after Iran and five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany - clinched a tentative framework for a nuclear deal.

President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would fulfill its promises under Thursday’s agreement, asserting that the deal signaled Iran had entered an era of 'new cooperation' with the world.

“Some think we should either fight with the world or give in to the global powers," Rouhani said, calling instead a 'third way' of engaging internationally and praising the work of his negotiating team in Switzerland.

Rouhani stressed that if the accord is completed in further negotiations and Iran complies with its terms, some international sanctions against the country would be lifted.

“We preserved the nuclear rights, we have removal of the sanctions and also constructive interaction with the world,” he said.

Rouhani added that all the six UN sanctions resolutions against Iran would be lifted at once when the tentative agreement between Iran and the 5+1 is finalized. “In the framework of the agreement that we reached at last night (late Thursday) the 5+1 accepted that Iran has enrichment on its soil,” he said.

He added, “yesterday, they said enrichment in Iran is a threat to the region and the world but today all have acknowledged that enrichment in Iran is not a threat to anybody.”
He added that Iranians "never seek to deceive" the international community.

President Rouhani said, “Our agreement with the other side has been and will be reciprocal; If the other side wants to choose another path, our people have their own choice as well."

Rejecting Western countries’ allegations that Iran’s program aimed to develop weapons, Rouhani said the Islamic Republic proved to the world its activities are for peaceful purposes only.

Rouhani emphasized the need for cooperation in international arena, saying that, “it is not that we want to settle the nuclear issue and that’s it; in today’s world, progress, development and stability in the region and world is not possible without cooperation and coordination.”

Pointing to the nuclear negotiations as the first step for constructive interaction with the world, Mr. Rouhani said he wants to improve relations with countries Iran was already friendly with, while fixing relations that were tense.

The president thanked Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and other relevant officials for their support for the administration and the country’s nuclear negotiating team.

He also appreciated the efforts made by the country’s negotiators in Switzerland.
